Canterbury Cathedral
Canterbury Cathedral commissioned 300 new ‘Assembly’ stacking oak chairs in 2001 - primarily for the crypt and chapter house, although one major occasion for which they were deployed in the Nave was for the installation of Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury on 23 Feb 2003.
Canterbury is one of the most popular cathedrals for tourists, averaging 1.2m visitors per year. The 11th century crypt is one of the earliest parts of the building. It is also one of the dampest. Nevertheless, at a recent inspection in 2025, all the chairs were found to be in immaculate condition, even after heavy use for a quarter of a century.
‘The chairs look extremely good in both the Chapter House and the Cathedral and all our credit is due to you and your craftsmen… you have made us lovely product which draws appreciative comments for both appearance and comfort’
Brig. John Meardon, Receiver General
