Salters' Hall

Salters’ Hall is home to the Salters’ Company, a 600-year-old Livery Company and one of London’s Great Twelve Livery Companies.

The Hall was bombed in 1941 and its replacement only opened in 1976, based on a design concept by Sir Basil Spence.

Along with the Leathersellers Hall, it is one of the few post-war Livery Halls in the City to have been built in a truly contemporary style. The 1970s interior design was by David Hicks.

The building was refurbished by de Metz Forbes Architects in 2016, a project that was awarded a RIBA London Regional Award in May 2018.

In 2025, following a commission furnishing the Court Room (in 2020), Luke Hughes was commissioned to design new 120 stacking chairs for the Hall, in the spirit of the Spence/Hicks original design intent.

The resulting design incorporated the frame and techniques of the classic Folio stacking chairs, albeit by varying the details of the back and top rails, and upholstering in the Hicks choice of the original fabric.

The new ability to stack the chairs and move them easily down to the basement has transformed the life of the catering team.
